Club Meeting 16th April 2026

The Club met for its usual Thursday night meeting on 16th April. We had an external speaker, Kate Southall, followed by our “One Month, One Image” challenge for March. We finished with discussions about our upcoming Exhibition.

Kate Southall

Kate Southall presented a very interesting evening outlining her early career as a professional photographer in the music industry.

The settings that she was presented with to photograph were often dark with difficult lighting for photography, she had to work fast in often cramped conditions.

However, we saw from her photos that she was able to use these difficulties to her advantage to produce excellent shots.

The Key Elements that she outlined for creating a good music shot can also be taken to other genres:

  • Lighting

  • Emotions

  • Timing and Anticipation

  • Composition (looking for colour, contrast, pattern and framing)

  • Storytelling

Kate now runs a photographic business in Chippenham, "Copper and Blossom Photography” (copperandblossom.co.uk) specialising in portrait and wedding commissions, but she explained how photographing live music events gave her a good foundation for her later work, using many of the same skills that she had developed in her earlier career in the music industry.

You can read more about Kate and her career, in her “About Me” section of her website. (https://www.copperandblossom.co.uk/about)

Kate has sent pictures that could be used for the blog that are not covered by BBC copyright:

One Month, One Photo Challenge

After the break we reviewed the selection of our members’ "One Month, One Photo” challenge for March.
