Tonight the club was really excited to warmly welcome Huw Alban to the club for his talk entitled “That’s not a Landscape Photograph”
Huw Alban
Huw is a very experienced photographer, who translates atmospheric sensory experiences into expressive landscape and coastal images.
Professionally, his spent his early career working with Formula One teams near his original Northamptonshire home (based at Silverstone) before moving on to being a freelancer, based in Dorset, specialising in the natural world and landscapes, with photographs published worldwide in magazines and books.
He is also a Sigma Creator, hosting workshops whilst showcasing Sigma lenses.
The main thrust of Huw's talk was to get us to think more creatively about our landscape photography. This could be through the use of Intentional in-Camera Movement (ICM) or adopting self-imposed challenges e.g. walk 1,000 steps in a landscape and then look to create an image where you find yourself.
Huw went on to encourage some self reflection via doodling! Apparently, when we almost absent-mindedly doodle, a 'trend' will appear as to what sorts of shapes and patterns our minds are instinctively drawn to. In Huw's case it was vertical lines, which went someway to explain one of his favourite type of landscapes - woodlands and trees.
Huw also encouraged us to focus more on producing imagery that WE are happy with rather than what we think OTHER people might like.
He suggested we often see the potential for a photograph in a given landscape, but perhaps hold back from taking the photograph fearing others might not see what captured your eye. This 'fear' can be a restraint on your creativity.
Throughout Huw's talk, a variety of images from his extensive portfolio, was displayed in a carefully choreographed sequence that smoothly connected with his narrative. A number of Sigma products were also on display for members to examine.
